Welcome to Boy Scout Troop 230

 Saylor Park 2006

Early in October we had a trip planned to the crags with a trek up the backside of Pikes Peak.  Sadly, an early snow followed by days of uncommonly cold weather mandated a change of plans.  So, what we decided to do was plan an entry level backpack trip to Saylor Park.  We figured this would be a great opportunity to get some of the newer Scouts feet wet (literally) as many of them had not been backpacking yet.  This outing involved some dirt road driving and approx 1.5 miles of packing down a 4x4 road.  We passed by the Beaver ponds and crossed the creek on some fallen logs to reach our campsite.  After setting up camp, the boys spent hours knocking down dead trees with only a few close calls.  The newer boys were taught some pioneering skills and learned about a number of different types of backpacking stoves.  In all, we had 4-5 different types of stoves for the newer boys to experiment with.  We were only able to snap a few pictures because the weather turned severe and we had to pack out early the next day, but this outing will definitely be on the agenda for next year.
